The aim of this research project is to establish an interpretation of power transition within the hierarchy of the international system based on an interpretivist theoretical framework. Rather than explain how states can transition to a higher status within the international system’s hierarchy by mere material means, such as size and diversity of economy, technological level of development, population size and military capacity, the project aims to better understand transition in the following ways:
• by perceiving the material circumstances in play, i.e. social/political relations as well as physical means of production, contributing to upward transition
• by perceiving the use of mass communication resources, specifically computer games, as a strategic tool
to increase a state’s capacity in soft power strategies
