This research project represents the first step in the empirical investigation of the importance of institutional factors in determining economic growth through imitation. We aim to test when relatively backward economies may switch away from the investment-based strategy. This will allow us to test whether the institutional governance that is appropriate to relatively backward economies should encourage imitation and investment-based growth, even if this comes at the expense of various market rigidities and a less competitive environment. Beyond a specific threshold, closer to the frontier, the institutional quality that helps a country to imitate leading countries' technologies may no longer be appropriate. Instead, strong institutional governance required for innovation and higher economic growth should be pursued.
